Food is the Foundation of Life

Access to nutritious food is a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of overall health and well-being. However, food insecurity is a rampant challenge across the greater Peninsula community, affecting over 48,000 individuals. Our mission at the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank is to “distribute food effectively through collaborative efforts that minimize hunger, promote nutrition, and encourage self-reliance through education.” Our efforts toward health promotion extend beyond food distribution and include intentionality behind sourcing nutritious and diverse foods that support the health and lifestyles of our neighbors.

The Health Initiatives Program at Virginia Peninsula Foodbank involves a multi-faceted approach that includes collaboration with various partners and organizations including the Federation of Virginia Foodbanks, healthcare hospitals and clinics, non-profits, religious organizations, etc. The goal of health initiatives programming is to bridge the gap in health inequities by addressing social drivers of health and reducing barriers that impact an individual’s ability to achieve positive health outcomes.
