History

Established in 1986, Virginia Peninsula Foodbank has been the leading hunger relief organization across the greater Peninsula serving the 1 in 8 Virginians who experience the daily hardships of food and nutrition insecurity. Food banks provide healthy food to individuals, children, families, seniors and veterans who otherwise might go without.

The continued increases in food and fuel costs have made it even more difficult for families facing hunger to access enough to eat and have put additional strains on food banks to purchase more food than ever due to the increase in need. With the higher cost of living, the Foodbank is experiencing an increase of up to 35% of individuals reaching out for assistance. For fiscal year ending June, 2023, the Foodbank's programs, monthly mobile food pantry distributions and partner agencies have had close to 322,000 visits compared to fiscal year ending June, 2022 244,000 visits. With this substantial increase in need, up by 35% and food donations down by 50% , the Foodbank is utilizing their purchasing power , with your help, to buy more healthy food. For every dollar donated, the Foodbank can provide the equivalent of three meals.

Together, over the last 38 years, we have provided 206 million meals. Hunger relief is truly a collaborative effort, and with the support of our partner agencies, generous donors, and committed volunteers, we are able to provide nourishment and hope to our neighbors in need each day. Good food today makes for a brighter future tomorrow.
